The Chicest Supermodel BFFs of the ‘90s

Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell

Though Moss’ waif-like, heroin-chic aesthetic was in sharp contrast to the glamorous, buxom look other supers, like Campbell, were known for, the two have remained close friends for more than three decades, appearing in countless runway shows and being snapped at various parties and events together. Most recently, the duo memorably walked in Kim Jones’ final Louis Vuitton show for the Fall/Winter 2018 season clad in matching monogrammed trench coats and hiking boots. 

Amber Valletta and Shalom Harlow 

As part of the next wave of supers who immediately succeeded the OGs, Valletta and Harlow became household names in the world of fashion after both being discovered at relatively young ages. Throughout the ‘90s, the two walked and posed for the greats, including Karl Lagerfeld and Steven Meisel, and graced the glossy pages of countless magazines. They also hit the big screen around the same time, co-hosting MTV’s iconic “House of Style” together and appearing in dozens of movies. 

Karen Mulder and Carla Bruni 

Mulder and Bruni, dubbed the “Blonde with Class” and “The Man-eater,” respectively, were largely inseparable throughout the ‘90s and several years beyond that. The two were often seen partying together in fashion capitals like New York City and Paris and in chic locales like Cannes, and were oft-compared to the era’s Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. Though their lives have since taken different trajectories, the two were crucial in cementing the decade as a glamorous and golden one. 

Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer

Though Crawford and Schiffer were among the iconic band of faces who ruled the catwalks in the ‘90s, the two had a special bond outside of the group, appearing on MTV’s “House of Style” (which Crawford hosted), in Revlon campaigns, and in Chanel shows together. It’s a friendship that apparently still holds: In addition to appearing in Donatella Versace’s sparkling tribute to her brother and the house’s founder, Gianni, for Spring/Summer 2018, Schiffer recently compared seeing Crawford to running into a classmate at “a high school reunion.” 

Tyra Banks and Kimora Lee Simmons 

Banks and Simmons (then Perkins) both entered the world of modeling around the same time, with Simmons nabbing a contract with Chanel at 14 years old and Banks signing with Elite at age 16. The two broke barriers in fashion together, with Banks becoming the first woman of color to grace the covers of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue and GQ, and Simmons going on to serve as muse for Karl Lagerfeld. In addition to being roommates and bridesmaids for one another, the two currently run their own empires. 

Kara Young and Christy Turlington

At 15 years old, Young and Turlington traveled from their hometown in California for go-sees and gigs. The two would go on to be photographed together by Richard Avedon for Revlon’s “Most Unforgettable Women” campaign and subsequently appear in other ads for big-name brands and in editorials for magazines. Though both have since taken on different paths, snaps from their heyday in the ‘90s prove the duo’s beauty prowess.

Helena Christensen and Carla Bruni

Bruni and Christensen go way, way back: In addition to traveling the world together and starring in campaigns for fashion heavy-hitters like Prada, Versace, and Chanel, the legends both dipped their toes in the music realm, with Bruni dating Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton (as well as launching her own successful career in singing and songwriting) and Christensen starring in Chris Isaak’s cult video for “Wicked Games.”

Linda Evangelista and Claudia Schiffer
With Schiffer eventually replacing Patitz in the “Big Five” (which later became the “Big Six” with the inclusion of Moss), both she and Evangelista enjoyed movie star-level fame throughout the ‘90s. Both appeared as brides in Karl Lagerfeld’s couture shows for Chanel—they were both also major muses for the French luxury house—and have even stormed catwalks arm-in-arm.

Naomi Campbell and Stephanie Seymour

Seymour recently got heat for her controversial statement in which she called models-of-the-moment Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner “bitches,” but she was right about one thing: Nothing compares to the original girls, which included her and, obviously, Campbell. The two have starred in tons of campaigns together over the years and became immediate friends after listening to Wham! and wreaking havoc all around London.

Niki Taylor and Tyra Banks

Banks has been candid about her admiration toward Taylor, despite the fact that they’re just one year apart and have both broken several records throughout their respective careers. The two worked together heavily throughout the decade, landing contracts with Victoria’s Secret and famously working as spokeswomen for CoverGirl. Outside of modeling, they’ve both worked in television, with Taylor even appearing on Banks’ talk show in 2007.
