Going for Gold - 3

DJ, singer and producer Yung Goldilox plays dress up exclusively for LUISAVIAROMA.COM.

Born and raised in Nova Scotia, the Canada-native first appeared on the scene with her self-titled single, ‘My Name is Kay’, the track transforming the unknown artist into a Youtube sensation virtually overnight and peaking at number 63 on the Canadian Hot 100 charts. A move to LA and a string of collaborations with LMFAO, Diplo, Steve Aoki and Pusha-T saw the young creative sign with Interscope Records. However, the partnership was to be a short lived one. Goldilox parted ways with the industry heavyweights in 2015, going on to release ‘Skin’, her first EP. “It’s the first time I’ve gone to that level musically. It’s raw. It’s real. I’m a real person that’s far from perfect, but I own it. That’s my skin”, on the title of her track.

Confident with a calm energy, it seems the singer songwriter’s time in LA has left its mark. A far cry from her doe-eyed fairytale counterpart, Goldilox possesses the kind of confidence most young artists could only dream of. We met her at MOVE ON, a hybrid vinyl store/bar in the heart of Florence and the scene for the day’s shoot. Fitting, considering the subject. Decked out in designs by Ellery, Helmut Lang and Isabel Marant, the singer appeared perfectly at ease in front of the camera, despite insisting she has never really been a fashion person.

I didn’t really come from a fashion background at all. For me, I am just so happy to have a front row seat to see what’s happening.

During the shoot, conversation quickly turns to social media. Like most 20-something millennials, the singer spends a good part of her day phone in hand. “I have a very strong relationship with technology, maybe too strong,” she laughingly admits. Jokes aside, her relationship with technology is certainly paying off. The singer’s Instagram boasts a thirsty-five thousand strong following and is a goldmine of edgy photoshoots, candid personal snaps and inspirational quotes.

So what’s next for the blue-eyed, blonde-haired songstress and producer? If 2015 is anything to go by, the new year is sure to be a promising one. Between front-row appearance, a string of high-profile gigs and a number of fashion features, not to mention her first album in the works, it’s safe to say Goldilox isn’t wasting any time.
